Rybek Pass

OOC Information

Email rybek.GM@gmail.com with character backgrounds and ideas.

Minimum is what you think we need to know about the character. Maximum is everything you think you need to know about the character. I will read 10,000 words of backstory.

Can I play…?

  1. A Lannister character? Yes. Yes you can. His ‘colours’ are wine red and black.
  2. A non-guild aligned character? Not in so many words. You can play as a character in a character created guild or organisation – but you would have to some organisation to belong to. (see below for some ideas)
  3. A non-normal race? Yes. If the character refs approve and we discuss the background document before the campaign gets going. However – be aware that other GMs may veto you from playing other games outside the campaign, as the character may not fit with their scenario.
  4. A proscribed guild? No.
  5. A proscribed race? No.
  6. A dark druid half drow / half ogre? How would that even… really?
  7. But the purple and grey make pink? They don’t in this case.

Where are we?

A new trade route linking the Baronies of Van Heusen and Lannister has been opened. Rybek Pass is in the northwest of the Van Heusen Barony and the southeast of the Lannister Barony. It allows passage through the Tormontberg Mountains, cutting nearly a week off the travel time between the two capitals.

What is our mission?

Both baronies are expected to provide defenders and guild patrolees to protect the newly opened pass. Duties will range from regular patrols to ensure the route is clear, diplomatic escort missions and ensuring the safety of the trade caravans that pass through. New recruits from both sides of the border are required to form a joint patrol with duties such as escorting people through the mountain pass, customs and anti-smuggling patrol and clearing out the last few Orcs and goblins from the pass.

What is the history of the area?

In 98 AE, Guard Captain Lannister lead a revolt in the northwest of the Van Heusen Barony, aided by some orc tribes. He managed to control the region and has now been recognised as Baron Lannister. During the revolt, the Orc Chieftain of Clan Bloodmaw was killed and the new chieftain, Yunkel One-eye, broke alliance with Lannister and took control of Rybek Pass on the new border. For the most part, the orcs stayed in the mountains, occasionally raiding on both sides, but in the last three years they had become more of a problem. This summer, a joint barony force of defenders attacked and retook the pass.

What is in the area?

The Tormontberg Mountains are perilous, with frequent rockslides and sudden storms. There are two known routes through Rybek Pass, the High pass and the Low pass.

To the south, on the Van Heusen side of the mountains, lies the mining village of Redsore, which has been a kingdom constituent for nearly forty years and the farming village of Karlson’s Farm which has grown in the last year. Between these two communities, a guild outpost and garrison is being set up, but is currently a series of large and small tents.

North of the border lies Graveston, a town which has prospered under Lannister rule and has a garrison barracks and a large temple of Might, a gladiatorial arena and an Artisan’s quarter. It also has an unusually large population of Half-Orcs.

How do we apply?

Guildmembers can apply through their guilds if they wish, or one of the groups listed beneath.

Defenders

A list of the Defender Units assigned to the garrisons.

Not all Defenders have to be part of these units and can be assigned for special duties.

Sponsoring groups

The following groups have been cleared to sponsor unguilded and guilded people in the area. Some of them are guilds – but being sponsored by a guild does not give you automatic access to their training.

Caravan Guards – Mercenaries

Three trade cartels have been given crown licenses to trade through the pass so far. These cartels are allowed to employ caravan guards (guilded and unguilded) as long as those guards are also made available for patrols. The cartels are as follows.

All three are hiring both individuals and mercenary groups.
