Waygate FAQ

All taken from the Rules Queries board.

Q. Concerning the Lickey End pathfinder bonus against goblins. If I decide to take it, do I then get my first “standard” Pathfinder bonus at rank 10?

If not, do I have to wait 10 more ranks for my next one, or until rank 20 (to sort out the bookkeeping)?

A. The Campaign Bonus from the Lickey End camp is that you can take your rank 10 Pathfinder bonus immediately, regardless of current rank. Otherwise, it doesn’t affect progression, so you will have to wait until rank 20 to take your second level of favoured enemy.

Q. With time flowing differently IC to OOC, how does Extension/Extend/downcasting currently work?

A. Personally cast effects and 15 min items are done by OOC time.

If you want something from an npc that lasts all day, you have to get the long duration version, but this drawback has been countered by reduced cost of available bits and pieces.

Q. Is prayer limited to once per IC day or once per OOC day? If I want to pray multiple times in a day, just for the sake of prayer, should I give some signal to indicate when I am doing it for the standing and when I am doing it for the glory of the gods?

A. Prayer is a once per OOC day skill.

In almost all cases, this is the same as once per IC day. Having multiple IC days on a game is not normal and is something Caroline and I are trying this year. I freely concede it’s not worked well, but we want to keep the basic concept around as it allows campaign depth by giving a wide area map the PCs can cover during one game.

Q. To learn miracles do I just have to pay the points for it or do I have to go to a temple/buy other skills first?

A. In pure game mechanics, all you have to do is spend the points, as long as the miracle is Level 2 or below.
After that you have to have somewhere to learn it from. Unless I’ve lost track of people totally, your PC is a Kingdom Pathfinder, which means that the Kingdom Wardens will teach you miracles up to Level 4.
Learning above Level 4 is restricted as very powerful, and you have to be at least Rank 15 to obtain Level 5 miracles.
Exceptions can occur from plot and roleplay.

Q. How does the Waygate pantheon work?

A. First, please let me assure you that the experienced players are asking the same questions. They may know Caroline and I a little better to have some idea of how we think, but still they are having to feel their way in the dark a bit.

A lot of the campaign related answers are going to be vague because no one other than Caroline and I know the definite answers, and discovering the facts is part of the campaign.

Something to consider – your character has “downtime” ability, to do stuff between games which aren’t life threatening missions. Perhaps have the character ask NPCs this and similar questions? (by emailling us the questions you want to ask – we’ll probably email back a quick and easy list of groups you can ask and have you pick one, then answer your questions)

Or attract the attention of a deity mid game and ask them directly?

Q. Waygate divinities encompass two kingdom divinities so do I choose one or the other?

A. Maybe. This is really into the questions we would like you to find out during play or partly find out from downtime, then follow up in game. Some of the PCs that are local to the area know more, NPCs know stuff, and the gods themselves of course.

Q. Can I change ‘religion’ easily (assuming I don’t abuse this)?

A. Any god you are worshipping will tell you no. Any you aren’t will tell you yes. I suspect the more time and energy your character invests in being with one or more gods, the greater the repercussions for ditching them, but depends on circumstances.

Q. Is there anything stopping me from learning a range of spells as well as miracles (other than the need to get mana and standing)?

A. The beauty of magic over miracles is that when learning magic no deity is looking over your shoulder telling you what to do with it. There are difficulties with learning magic in the setting, but as a Defender you can evade most of that by learning from the Wardens. Regardless, you can learn up to Level 2 spells easily.
