What type of characters can I play? Are there any restrictions?

There are no campaign-based restrictions on what character races/classes/guilds players can play – if it’s available as a normally-playable race or class or guild (and/or you can get it past Marcus in the event of unusual cases being referred to him), then you are welcome to play it in the campaign.

What about this idea I’ve got for a special character of wibble that has three bells, no fewer than six whistles, and may well be tie-able to your plot?

See above. If Marcus approves the concept, then we will consult with you on how the character might be able to fit into the campaign.

My character has never even heard of archaeology. Why would they be at a dig?

There are all kinds of reasons why character might show up at a newly formed settlement surrounding an interesting discovery. If you are uncertain how your character might fit in, discuss your concept with us and we’ll do our best to make some suggestions.

The dig is run between the Temples of Freedom and Balance, the Circle, the Defenders and Humacti. If I play one of those, will I get anything special compared to a character from a different guild?

Definitely not. Playing a character from one of the “involved guilds” will gain you nothing that will not be just as readily available to a character from a different guild.

Can I play an old character, or do I have to create a new one?

As long as the character is within the rank bracket for the game, there is nothing stopping you playing one from previous years if you wish, and they can join the campaign at any time up to the 36hr. If you are unsure how they might find their way to the dig at the appropriate time to become involved, discuss it with us and we will find a way to accommodate you.

What about local characters? Can my character be local/already be working at the dig?

There is nothing to stop you playing a character from the immediate/almost immediate area. We will provide an enhanced local brief for those who live or already work in the vicinity.

Do characters get any starting money?

Yes – any new characters brought out for the campaign will receive 2g ‘relocation allowance’ (even if they are a local).

Setting

If I build a makeshift building, can I upgrade it to a permanent one by working on it for the difference in man-days between makeshift and permanent?

Yes, but you will not be able to use the building while the renovation work is progressing. You can, however, halt the work at any time, and still use the makeshift facilities. Once renovations have started, however, if no work takes place on the building for a month, it will start to degrade at the rate of one man-day’s worth of work for every day over a month it remains un-worked on.

Can I have a map of the setting?

Yes, if you draw one yourself. There’s a copy of the map on the Maps and Setting page, feel free.

If I stay in location X after the game, can I have more days of downtime?

No. Five days is a game-mechanics construction rather than a careful calculation based on where characters end up at the end of each game and is there to keep things both simple and fair.

The only benefit you will get is that you won’t need to travel to location X before starting any actions there.

General/Other

Will there be IC meals?

We certainly hope so. We aim for there to be one IC meal every three months or so, aimed at campaign characters but freely available to be attended by anyone. Similarly, there is nothing in the campaign to stop campaign characters from attending other IC meals if they want to.

[ Top ]

Will my character be able to make it to the 24hr?

We certainly won’t stop you – there is nothing in the campaign to prevent campaign characters from attending whatever 24hr happens to take place.

[ Top ]

I want to learn to GM. Can I help out with a campaign game?

Certainly – discuss with us when you would like to have a go, and we will be happy to let you join in.

[ Top ]

I’m too busy to commit to downtime. Will I fall behind or be missing out?

Only on the enjoyment of the interaction. While there will be a downtime system available to all players who wish to use it, that will allow deeper immersion into the campaign, it will not grant any in-game advantage over those who do not use it. We aim for the downtime system to provide depth to the players, not to allow them to forge ahead.
